cf. Wikipedia (russ.): He was the only bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church who publicly acknowledged (in 1992) his collaboration with the KGB (in 1972–1990 under the pseudonym "Restorer"). He explained his decision by the need to protect the interests of the church: "If I did anything while working with them, it was solely for strategic purposes, to save the church."
In 2002, he emphasized once again that he had not used his connections with the KGB to the detriment of the Church and the faithful:
"As for me, I was in contact with the KGB, but I was not an informer. For example, as a bishop, I received KGB approval for the appointment of priests to parishes. I proved to the 'collaborators' that my actions were right and did not sing the songs they expected me to sing: about the justice of the system and the wisdom of the rulers."
